Mauricio Silva Kuhn

From serving tables to an online business that makes millions.

No inheritance, no network, no plan B. One room, a laptop, everything I knew about selling, and a market nobody around me had ever heard of.

The story

Five chapters, with one room in the middle.

Nothing about this path was planned. Every job I had before the room taught me something I later used to sell in a market I had to learn from scratch.

01

Waiter

Tips paid for engineering school.

Before any of this I carried plates. I was studying engineering, and serving tables was the only way to pay for it. Long shifts taught me to read a table in seconds: who wants to talk, who wants to be left alone, who is about to order dessert.

I did not know it yet, but that was my first sales training.

02

Lettuce salesman

I dropped out and went to sell lettuce.

I left the degree to work at a relative's company as a lettuce salesman. Nothing glamorous about it. But it was sales in its purest form: a product that spoils in days, buyers who can get it from anyone, and a margin that only survives if they order from you again next week.

I got good at it. Then one day I was tired of all of it, and I quit.

03

Alone in a room

I locked myself in and studied a market nobody knew.

No job, no safety net. I shut myself in a room and studied everything I could find about a market nobody around me had ever heard of: nutraceuticals in the United States.

Every lesson from the restaurant and the lettuce route got rewritten for a new product, a new language, and a new country.

04

First dollar

Months with nothing. Then one order.

It took months to earn the first dollar. The bills did not wait for it. I had a wife and a newborn son to support, and a room with nothing to show for it.

Then the first sale came through. After it, another. And another.

First dollar

The ledger from the room. Months of zero before the first order came in.

05

Recurring

Whoever bought once bought again the next month.

Here is the part that changed everything. The sales were recurring. A customer who bought in one month came back the next.

I was not collecting sales anymore. I was building a base, and every month started higher than the last.

New customersCame back from last month

Illustrative. Each month's new customers stack on top of the ones who reordered.

The whole business, in one sentence

Whoever bought once bought again the next month.

Today

The company I started in that room now makes millions.

Most of it comes from customers who reorder every month. I still sell the way I learned to at the tables and on the lettuce route: read the person, deliver, and earn the next order.

What I talk about

  • Selling, from the ground up

What waiting tables and selling lettuce teach you about closing, and why it transfers to any product.

  • Recurring revenue

Why one customer who comes back twice is worth more than two who never return, and how to build for it.

  • The US nutraceutical market

Starting from zero in a market nobody around you knows, from another country, in another language.
